Former Australian cricket star Michael Slater has collapsed in court after his bail request was denied in relation to an alleged domestic violence incident. The 54-year-old has been in custody since his arrest over the weekend, with police detailing the allegations against him as he sought bail.
According to the court proceedings, some of the alleged incidents were captured on CCTV that showed verbal abuse and forceful entry into the woman’s home. Mr. Slater appeared in prison attire and reacted strongly to the refusal of bail, collapsing while being escorted back to the cells.
Mr. Slater is facing charges, including entering a dwelling with intent, assault, stalking, and breaching bail. If released, he expressed intentions to reside in a Sydney rehab facility. However, his lawyer emphasized that he denies all violence allegations.
Despite the defense’s arguments, the police opposed bail, citing Mr. Slater’s history and the seriousness of the alleged offenses. The court was informed that the victim was allegedly subjected to violent acts, including assault, as captured on CCTV.
Magistrate Raelene Ellis ultimately refused bail, considering the nature and timing of the alleged offenses. Mr. Slater is renowned for his cricketing career and subsequent commentary roles, having played 74 test matches and 42 one-day internationals for Australia between 1993 and 2001.
